I actually think Cruise was right when he said people just don't get Eyes Wide Shut. A lot of people take some movies at face value or have expectations, but Eyes Wide Shut is literally an odyssey of judgement and self-discovery. The question of "who am I really?" runs throughout the movie, and if you look at the movie from that perspective you realise that it's pretty impressive. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a masterpiece, very few movies are, but it's certaintly not a bad movie.

Kubrick thought Eyes Wide Shut was his best movie. Eyes Wide Shut is obviously a masterpiece. Watch it a bunch of times if you like movies. Here's a little tidbit... the shot at :39 of this video is a rear projection shot.

Bottom line: this wasn't a great movie - but a good one! It wasn't Cruise's and Kidman's best performace - but a good one! And it wasn't Kubrick's best directing - but a good one...

There's a few great shots in the movie, but i unwaveringly believe people only praise this flick because Kubrick's name is on it, and read too much into it.
Without the prestige of the "genius" director, this movie would've been an after midnight staple on Cinemax.
