Welcome to my personal review of climbing rose “St Swithun” -(Auswith) introduced by DAR in 1993

A really useful, incredibly vigourous,easy to train climbing rose which can also be grown as a large informal shrub if given some support

One of the few climbing roses not particularly fussy about having its canes brought into the horizontal position to stimulate flower and growth for the inexperienced gardener. This can simply be fan trained against a wall and still produce lots and lots of flowers.

Demanding to be planted in full sun it has large broad foliage which has a wonderful silver grey tone to it which makes the backdrop for his large pink blooms which are born freely from June all the way through to the back end of September

Originally launched to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the consecration of Winchester Cathedral

Flowers open from deeply textured candy pink buds tinged with raspberry and small tones of Orange opening into large Flat disk like flowers around 4 to 4 1/2 inches across there is a cabbage like centre protecting the central statements and Meeting the flowers last a good amount of time on the plant

There is plenty of vigour in this climber producing lots of vigourous growth from the base. It’s easy to train and virtually thornless packing around 130 petals in per flower it’s hardy in zones. 4-11

One of the few climbers I would suggest you can grow in a large container due to its size
But due to its preference for being planted in direct sunshine, you are going to have to watch your watering and feeding

The fragrance is warm and myrrth based pungent smoky with notes of baked clay and warm earth it carries beautifully on the wind on a warm day

I have this one really healthy shrub in my zone 4. I love everything about this rose, i grow it as a shrub and it has a nice round form. I even forget it is a climber. Strong canes, i dont even gave any support for it! The flowers are usually lovely deep cup with big button eye. Flowers are sometimes opened flat or cup shape! Strong nice fragrance to my nose. Thanks for the review !

Hi Ben, I have an idea but not sure if it can be done. A rambling rose trained as a standard and weeping blooms all over and maybe grown with something similar, what you think?

It's been very sunny and hot so I am having to bring the new roses I have in the shade because of sunburn crazy stuff
