Official music video of “Think Of Laura” by Christopher Cross

Cross wrote "Think Of Laura" about Laura Coffin Carter, an 18-year-old student at Denison University in Granville, Ohio who was killed by a stray bullet on April 17, 1982. At the time Cross was dating Paige McNinch, who was Laura's best friend and one of her sorority sisters. He wrote this song to honor Laura's memory.

After the song's release it was featured in the popular soap opera "General Hospital" as the love theme for the characters Luke and Laura, who were arguably the most well known of all daytime TV couples. Its use on the show vaulted the song up the charts, and in February 1984 it reached #9 on the US Hot 100 and went to #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, where it stayed for four weeks. Boyz II Men recorded a new version of this song called "Think of Aaliyah (The Aaliyah Song)" in honor of the singer Aaliyah after she died in 2001.

LYRICS
Hey Laura, Laura
Hey Laura, Laura

Every once in a while
I'd see her smile
And she'd turn my day around
A girl with those eyes could stare through the lies
And see what your heart was saying

Think of Laura
But laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way
When you think of Laura
Laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way

A friend of a friend
A friend 'til the end
That's the kind of girl she was
Taken away so young
Taken away without a warning

Think of Laura
But laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way
When you think of Laura
Laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way

I know you and you're here
In every day we live
I know her and well, she's here
I can feel her when I sing

Hey Laura, where are you now?
Are you far away from here?
I don't think so
I think you're here taking our tears away

Think of Laura
But laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way
When you think of Laura
Laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way

ABOUT CHRISTOPHER CROSS
Christopher Cross burst onto the music scene with his 1979 self-titled debut album produced by Michael Omartian. The lead single “Ride Like The Wind” spent 4 weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was quickly followed up by Cross’ most popular single to date (and first #1 hit) “Sailing”, which later became known as the archetype for the Yacht Rock genre. In 1981, Cross became the first artist in Grammy history to win the “Big Four” most prestigious awards in a single night; Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also “Sailing”), and Best New Artist. Later that year Cross released “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer, Peter Allen, and was the title-theme for the 1981 film “Arthur” starring Dudley Moorre and Liza Minnelli. The song earned Cross his second #1 and the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 1981 Academy Awards. Cross’ sophomore album “Another Page” was released in 1983 and featured the singles “Think of Laura” and “All Right”. Cross has sold over 10M albums worldwide and his songs have been covered and sampled by NSYNC, Puff Daddy, Avant, Shirley Bassey, Dione Warwick, and many more.

Who’s here in May of 2024? Such a classic! I wish music in today’s society was done like this. Someone really needs to invent a time machine.

This song came out in 1983, the same time my mother was diagnosed with leukemia and died two months later. My mother’s name was Laura.

Went to his concert last Friday, August 2, 2024, in Puerto Rico. He closed the show with this song with just his pianist. Incredible and unforgettable moment. Thank you for coming to our island, Christopher. We love you.

Christopher, you will never know how this song touched our lives. Our beautiful niece just about to graduate high school, a beautiful soul. Not long after this song came out she was killed in an auto accident. We played this awesome song at her funeral, her name was Lora. This was around 86, I think, and we still miss her so much. So I still listen to this song and remember her. You do a wonderful job singing it. Thank you God Bless.

I love this song. Loved it back in the day!
And today I’d cried listening, thinking of my granddaughter.
Kaylee was 7 1/2 years old in 2016 when we learned the dreaded news that she had terminal brainstem cancer 18 months later corner came and took her away….

Coincidentally, I just remembered the song I wanted to listen to "Think of Laura". I typed the song name and ended up here. I noticed that today is April 17, 2024. She passed away 42 years ago. It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever listened to. Laura, may your soul rest in peace.

1983 I was a 12 years old when this song came out in the radio. Man.. still takes me back to this day. LIFE was so good growing up as a kid back then. Though tragic this song may be lyrically.. the music the notes.. just warms my heart and touches my soul to the day. 2023.

I am not certain if their are to many recording artists, that can so effortlessly envoke such genuinely beautiful, as well as at times tragic emotions, as Mr. Cross, has been able to convey over his incredible career. Such a truly profound artist...
