I think that the gears not changing the direction of things is intended to make it easier to build transmissions so you don't have to worry about direction but I can see how it can be frustrating.

planetary gears can't be directly hooked to hinge connectors, they can be used but you need to transfer power through at least one normal gear between your planets and hinge.

The reason the first propeller system didn’t work was because of the planetary gears the YouTuber scrapman made a video about a heli in screwdrivers a few days ago where he figured that out

With planetary gears, you need to have normal gears in between specifically for the axle to normal connector pieces.

I use small gear to small gear back to small gear so it can stay in a line.
