WTF Happened to The Beastmaster?

Back in the 1980s, sword and sorcery films seem to be a go-to genre. Roger Corman himself made a handful of them as all you needed was some open spaces, a strapping hero in a leather loincloth, and preferably some buxom beauties who were in some sort of trouble, probably from some sort of evil wizard. One person who saw a great opportunity to make a fantasy epic was probably not the first one to come to mind.

After making a couple of family-friendly films, Don Coscarelli burst onto the scene with his horror film Phantasm. This fever dream of a film caught the imagination of audiences everywhere as the Tall Man began to haunt their dreams. More importantly, film executives were paying attention to how well the film had done. Coscarelli now could line up his next film. He wanted to create a fantasy film about a hero who could talk to animals. The Beastmaster was about to be born. When it came time to actually film the movie, Coscarelli would soon find that the real horror of his life may be bringing this film to life. So let's find out what exactly happened to The Beastmaster here on WTF Happened To This Movie.

One of the best things I like about this movie is the music. They hit the nail on the head with that.

I don't care what anybody says about The BEASTMASTER, I really enjoyed watching this movie as a kid. It's been a while since I've watched it, but thanks for the motivation to get back on it. 👍

This movie was responsible for one of the coolest memories I have with my dad. He saw me watching it and then using a stick or something as a pretend sword, so he took me down to the basement and carved me a sword out of a piece of wood. Thanks, Beastmaster.

Marc Singer was a big part of 80s kids childhood with Beastmaster and the TV show V.

I met Marc Singer at Dragoncon a few years ago. Genuinely nice dude! He basically said he knew part 2 & 3 were terrible going in but felt a responsibility to the character and to all the people who would get work because of them.

Never knew it was overshadowed by Conan...Funny thing is, BeastMaster & Conan, those two were my favorite Fantasy sword fighting movies of all times as a kid in the 80s...They'll never be forgotten.

Damn. One of my childhood favorites. It was so sad when one of the ferrets died.

The most underrated 80s fantasy film, Rip Thorn is a lot of fun in the film, but you can’t go wrong with cute animal sidekicks

The mothmen where the best part. The scene where they embrace the enemy grunts and they turned into skeletons really stuck with me to this day.

I love this movie. My favorite part is how much it's structured like a video game. Every time I watch it, the video game beats and mechanics jump out to me. It has mini bosses, plus a huge last boss at the end. Why someone hasn't made this a killer game baffles me.

Loved this movie And I was growing up at the right time to really appreciate Tanya Roberts. The story and setting were cool and the designs were really creative. So much fun.

Ah yes, this movie was a staple of mine growing up. It was in our small family VHS movie library and so I’ve seen it tons of times as a kid.

I wrote an episode of the BEASTMASTER TV series -it was filmed in Australia. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to go. But I still get residuals for that episode, so somebody still watching it!

I didn't watch this until I was an adult. Saw it on streaming and figured it would be fun cheesy bit of fantasy action. It certainly was that. What I wasn't expecting was the level of production value! There is some seriously good cinematography and practical effects work going on.

I was obsessed with this movie. I drew that symbol on my hand and named my hamsters Kodo and Podo.
