She Says People Need To Give Credit Where Credit Is Due Regarding Cultural Foods

Cultural appropriation, to many, means people with a privileged status taking cultural identity markers without permission or without acknowledgment from members of a minority community. This can include language, art, music, literature, clothing, food, beauty standards/traditions, social norms, customs, and values. So, does that mean that a Caucasian person can never own a Chinese restaurant? Can a Latino wear braids or locks? Should children never wear Halloween costumes that depict another culture, ethnicity or race? When does admiration turn into appropriation, and is the argument against appropriation just? Does the anti-appropriation movement ever turn into a form of racism? Meet a young woman who says she received death threats for wearing a dress from another culture, a woman who says she was called out for cosplaying a Japanese anime character, and a woman who says people need to stop stealing other cultures' foods and calling them their own. Dr. Neal Lester, foundation professor of English at Arizona State University, Brittany Collins, influencer and business owner, and Amala Ekpunobi, PragerU personality and host of the podcast Unapologetic LIVE, join Dr. Phil for a passionate debate. Does she really think in the history of humankind no other people put sugar and fruits into water?

Honest to god I’m scared of how easily America is handing out Professor positions. This is why America’s life expectancy is going down.

This country is so misguided when is come to appropriation. We are a nation of immigrants. We all share what we are with each other. I live in such a mixed community where none of this mess ever comes up. It's only when feeding the narrative via media that these topics have any relevance. In fact when people voice these types of opinions in the real world, the rest of us look at them like they are ridiculous. People need to stop living through social media and get back into the real world.

Ok I have an Irish, Nordic, German culture and I am offended that she is “appropriating” my red hair. I feel like I deserve credit. (Sarcasm included)

In Uganda we have a side dish called kachumbali it’s basically chopped onion and tomato and we eat it with grilled meet. Some time I went to Mexican restaurant with best friend and we got a side of salsa and we were both shocked about how similar it is to Kachumbali. Because of this I believe it’s possible to have two types of food in two different cultures that are incredibly similar. So the whole food appropriation is just so weird

Eat our food we are flattered that you like it! Cook it! We DON'T care.
Also I always think it's funny when people dress like original mexican dress, I LOVE IT!

There are *actual* problems in the world and "food appropriation" isn't one of them. Stop seeking victimhood.

Tell the professor to take off the three piece suit and shoes, he’s culturally appropriating Europeans. 👞

What a RIDICULOUS discussion! When children starve in the world people are discussing how making a drink with ingredients easily available everywhere is 'appropriated' from another culture.
All I see is A LOT of low self esteem!

OMG this people are insane. Do they enjoy getting offended by everything? Are they trolling us and I’m not getting the joke?
I cannot believe this is being debated, we have bigger issues to take care of 🤦🏻‍♀️

So if I put ingredients in a blender and improvise and what comes out is similar to a drink or soup that originated from another part of the world, I'm an appropriator? That professor is really off base and a little nuts

This guy is so full of it haha. Says they should be paid in one sentence and then contradicts. 😂 if you ask him what watch he wears what shoes he’s wearing or who made his suit? Baffling. I buy food from grocery, I cook it and show someone. Never ending nonsense.

Nothing is being "stolen", it is being shared. Shared by everyone who is on this Earth for such a short time. We all need to be together in this and not so divided. There's division in so many ways, and these types of people want to make it seem like it's some big lesson when it's really an unnecessary thing to be thinking about. We all have enough going on. Food gives us life, helps to sustain us and allows us moments of joy with family and friends.

Soooo do we want cultural acceptance and blending or do we want cultural gatekeeping and segregation? You can't have both

I wish Amala talked more. I would’ve loved to see her destroy that professors arguments. I was also pleasantly surprised that Dr. Phil was not so left leaning on this subject.
