Naked Bible Podcast 094 — The Sin of the Watchers and Galatians 3–4

Biblical scholars know that Paul subordinates the Law to Christ (Gal 3:1–18). He writes about how the Law could not result in the fruition of the promises given to Abraham (and, by extension, to all nations; Gen 12:1–3). Paul then asks “Why then was the law given?” He answers that it was “added because of transgressions” (Gal 3:19). The most common assumption is that this (somehow) means the Law was a response to Adam’s sin, or human sins. But, and Adam sinned only once so far as the Bible tells us. Opting for the law being added in response to human sins doesn’t address why humanity became so wicked that it needed the law. Most Christians would defer to Adam’s transgression at this point, but there is no Romans 5:12 in Galatians (Romans is a later epistle). This episode takes a minority view of Paul’s statement about the addition of the law—at least among Christians. This view, however, reflects the viewpoint of nearly every Second Temple Jewish text (Paul’s era) known to exist that comments on human depravity: that the Law was added to restrain human evil, which proliferated not because of Adam, but because of the sin of the Watchers in Gen 6:1–4.

I absolutely love the Naked Bible Podcast!!!
I've been digesting a lot of edifying info from the podcast over the past week or so.
I was sent in this direction by Omega Frequency and the Fourth Watch Guys, and wow, what a blessing it has been. A lot of edifying material that can be used both in witnessing and Apologetics.
God Bless You All in the Name of Jesus
Peace and Love to All

Saved my life, ok im trying to make a point: you cant go forward by looking backwards- avoiding debt, but in good faith you increase in good well beyond merely debt avoidance.

Wow! Thank you! The watchers got through after the flood! The law was there and still is to allow the Jews to consider, while waiting on Jesus to be born of a woman under the law!

Dr. Heiser convincingly connects the watchers of Genesis 6:1-4 to the problems encountered by Galatians. A dot connecter for sure.

Interesting. I wonder if there's a parallel between David's fall with Bathsheba, and what the Watchers did; in both cases disaster, shame, and separation is the result of taking a desirable woman as a wife who was not available to take. That God brings something good out of it, and keeps His promise to preserve David's line for a Messiah, is a lesson at the level of the Law, but on the level of the Watchers transgressions, the lesson for humans would be: take heed -- what happened to the Watchers, could happen to you too. Also, it's worth pondering how David listened, and felt broken -- "You are the man" -- and whether it is recorded anywhere that the Watchers were given a warning. When the Watchers begged Enoch to intercede, what was their motive? To regain power and place, or to repent and obey? I suspect we are all fortunate that David understood that his transgression was, at its root, against God. Had that not been the case, he would have been no better than the Watchers.

What about the women who gave birth to the nephalim, how can they be judged if the watchers(took them of all whom they chose)?
