Canon Cinema Raw Light explained

Cinema RAW Light, the Canon-developed compact RAW file format is not only fast and easy to use but also allows creatives to achieve results that are simply not possible with other codecs. Advertising filmmaker Brett Danton and colour grading expert Ollie Kenchington discuss how to get to grips with Canon's Cinema Raw Light and the advantages it brings on shoots.

"RAW scares a lot of people because they think it's hard to handle, but it's not," says Brett Danton.

Ollie Kenchington, who runs an award-winning corporate film production agency adds "Cinema RAW Light is a fantastic codec to work with: lots and lots of data, but lightweight enough to edit with a laptop."

Great! Thanks Canon. Finally some pro level content for professionals using your equipment. I switched over to Canon EOS Cinema (C200 and now also R5) from a Red and Sony background and I absoltey love what you're doing with Cinema Raw Light!

Ollie's colors are insane. Arguably the best I've seen. Just different level work.

I just got the R5C And I’ve been debating whether not to use the cinema raw light. I needed more information because it intimidates me because I usually work with as much smaller workflow but my projects are calling for something bigger so I know I have to step up. After watching this it makes me want to step up so I plan to shoot cinema raw light soon👏👏👏 thanks 😊

Thanks a ton. Super video. I just purchased a R5 Canon. I'm normally a still photographer. But every now and then there's a need to shoot a little bit of video. Your explanation of camera raw light is great. I'm going to start using it. Thanks again.

You loose stabilisation with the C70, they should atleast have gyro data to stabilize in post. :( Hoping for a update with 6k image and gyro!

My computer chocks on this footage 2016 macbook pro and takes over an hour to export with a heavy grade on it in premiere (3-minute export takes over an hour). Do you suggest any computer in particular that can handle playback and export?

What are the real life differences between Cinema RAW Light and Canon RAW (as in the Canon R5)? Thanks

Since I’ve had my R5 shooting in RAW or LIGHT it won’t open in Final Cut Pro X even with the Canon plug in. So I can’t edit my footage.

The most shocking thing was realising how much dynamic range you lose from going to Canon Log 3 from CL2...seems like the current mirrorless cameras are really being restricted, quality-wise for video.

Thank you for this, a great video for us looking for information for Canon's "higher end cameras". However, I'd still do more, if I was Canon, to produce more quality content marketing. Professionals in todays fast moving world still need hands on advice on how to use pro gear. I personally just invested a considerable amount of money on Canon gear (C300mk3) and for my surprise found almost no info on how to work with it. All I got was these one minute quick tips on how to name your files, etc. Naturally I will go through the owners manual and do tests for my own workflow but wouldn't it be nice if Canon would provide me with why's instead of how's. Well, I'd settle for how's as well, for now.
Yes, I know, the market is quite narrow for your C500's and C700's but still, it's there and to try and fight against your quick fix gopros and such, I'd make an effort. Honestly, Canon and Nikon, you will lose if you trust your name and history. I mean, you are a camera company, why not make a set of "how to's" on your great products. This coming from an old school "quality work first" kinda guy.
