I could easily balance my personal financial budget for this year by not making any payments on my modest mortgage debt. But that would result in my lender initiating a foreclosure, and I would likely lose my home before the year was finished.

Newsom's proposal is smoke and mirrors. He's counting on the eagerness of the left wing of his party to take his "balanced" budget as proof that their big government, high tax model is working, and their willingness to overlook a more than $20 billion outstanding debt to the federal government.

Of course nobody outside of Newsom's inner circle has seen all of the details of the proposed budget, but I would bet that it includes, in addition to being silent on the state's large debt, questionable assumptions about unrealized tax revenues. All the bleating and braying about incoming President Trump being an existential threat to the state are merely scare tactics to justify transferring untold millions of dollars of public money into the hands of lawyers who will be tasked with "fighting" Trump's proposed policies, of which none create any credible cause for budget concerns for California.
