Great thoughtful video as usual Matt. Im so glad to see you still stick up for the Brand you love to shoot and dont just change on a whim like so many you-tubers have. Take care and stay safe in lockdown again. See you should live up in Brissy lol.

All I need is the autofocus of the Sony a9 in my z6 and I’m satisfied

I have a Nikon D850 and a Z6. The former is my all rounder landscape camera. The latter, my family, people pics, travel camera...or when my back hurts, and I want to go light. All I need is some minor incremental improvements to the Z7 and I will jump in...a Z7s might be enough. I just cannot make the use case for 60MP, which is what the Z8 will likely bring. My stingey side may just settle on a Z7 anyway, once the Z7s launches, if it gets deep discounted to clear inventory. Interesting times indeed.

The landscape now is completely different than the time I started photography. If they released today's cameras five years ago, the tech that comes with it would be too overwhelming for all creatives back then. Imagine the tech that the cameras would have in the near future.

I agree, really interesting, maybe an inspiring camera. A lot of people have argued that it’s specified beyond a realistic use case. I also see the argument there, for now, but for many photographers, this temporal argument possibly shouldn’t apply: you’re almost always capturing images now, for later. That is what this camera promises.

If you think the files are too big or that your computer is too slow then that’s just a choice, Yes or No, and because computers are basically consumables and rapidly change, and have in the past rapidly changed, the argument is fairly unoriginal at best.

The bit that I’m not 100% envious of, but retain a degree of envy about, is all of the new telephoto glass.

You have to give them kudos for playing the long game both on glass and with this camera and pushing the boundaries of what is reasonable.

Matt, I can't make any big noise about the 8k video. no-one in the real world has any device to watch it on.
I don't even have anything to watch 4k on.
8K is not significant to my use cases.

Matt, I also wonder now how many new buyers will be tempted away from Sony not JUST because of the parity in specs, but just as much because of the Canon brand and heritage? These incremental improvements are impressive for sure but the prices are now also getting ridiculous IMO. To buy this camera plus an L optic is going to be the best part of $5k - that's just way more than I would pay. Technical wizardry is here to stay and gives us results impossible to achieve 10 years ago, but artistic ability can't be bought and every creative should just take a breath before investing in something that MIGHT improve their results - MIGHT!

Kudos to canon, the sleeper of the bunch has awakened. It’ll be interesting to see what Nikon has up their sleeves with the z8.

Both these cameras look very nice, and the lenses look so good, would I swap no I am happy with the Nikon's I have but the Z7s just around the corner may be. Nice video. As far a Sony goes I did try the A7 but just found it to small in the hand and the menu system a nightmare to the extent I did not use the camera and got ride of it after a short time.

I’ve heard of the overheating issues in the r5. I would hesitate buying it if i wanted the camera for 8k/4k video. The camera also has a symbol to tell you when it over heats.

As long as Nikon can match the R6 for video (4k60 10bit 4:2:2 HDR) It will be fine in the medium term for video.

The A7Siii will likely be 1:1 or 6k downsampled, but with unlimited record limits to march Panasonic.

Bigger issue for Nikon is still focus performance and implementation. Its fine for my purposes, but they need to stay competitive in more demanding fields.

The other worry for Nikon is that Canon is going below and above them in the lens market.

HI Matt, can you make another video about R5. Seems that there are new information on rumor sites that recording time is very limited due to overheating. Seems like good cam for someone in Alaska or Siberia. Nevertheless Canon had balls to come out with something new and daring.

I"m quite sure your use case is going to be the typical response by most users: they are committed to one eco system or another and will wait for their system to catch up.
Unless you're a Pentax user.
All these hybrid cameras, makes me ponder if there will ever be a niche stills camera market.

Interesting video put out by Max Yuryev on Canons details about the overheating specs on the R5/R6. It would appear that Canon has managed to protect its video cameras from the R5/R6 by limiting the capability of these cameras to 20 - 30 min and then it takes a long time to recover, making the cameras impractical for any serious video work. This happens even at 4k/30 making the z6 a better camera for video. This seems to be a very clever move on Canons part to grab the spotlight while managing the use. This definitely opens up the market for the A7S3 and more importantly the Z6s and Z7s. It is indeed an interesting time in the camera market

Very interesting and I do think that Canon cripple hammer with issues of heating in both R5 and R6 plus the slower SD card instead of 2 CF express cards may veer especially wedding photographers away and stick with there existing Canon cameras.

I'm interested to know your thoughts on the 600mm and 800mm f/11 lenses and their usability in real-world shooting vs diffraction.

I still love my Z6. My only 2 concerns with Nikon is 1) now that the Z6s is supposed to be coming, does that mean we will not see firmware tweaks for the Z6? 2) why the hell can't Nikon get that 70-200 f2.8 Z lens out!!! WTF ALREADY!!!!

Does 8K video bring the possibility of extracting decent stills from the video footage. If so, this could mark the beginning of a major change in event photography, where the traditional video/photo combination can begin to be replaced by a videographer with more skills. this may be a big change in the industry - any thoughts?

So many new versions in such a big speed over the market - there does not seem to be much time to photograph. Especially if one take into account that it takes a lot of time to get familiarized with a camera to use it seriously.
But maybe the focus has changed from taking imagrs to comparing specs an counting ...

I’m glad it’s over 7 grand otherwise I might regret my Z7 I bought a few months ago. I wonder what the files are like? That’s the important part for me.
