👋 Let's do this! After selling my automatic Toyota Supra over a year ago and then recently buying the all new 2023 Manual Transmission Toyota Supra, today we compare the automatic Supra to the manual Supra back to back! I am loving the 6 speed manual in the Toyota Supra and it fits my taste so well! However I did love the benefits on my automatic Supra while I owned it. So today we check out this pre-owned 2022 Toyota Supra equipped with the ZF 8 speed automatic and compare all of the benefits and negatives with the auto Supra vs the 6 speed manual Supra. We also talk a bit about transmission choice in general for modern sportscar and all the pros and cons of having an automatic or manual. The benefits of an automatic sportscar is that they are faster! Modern autos are lightning quick to make a gear change and simply end up producing faster lap times and better drag race times. A human just could never shift a manual as fast. Automatics are also convenient. Owning a cool sportscar like a Supra is a lot of fun especially when it can be a commuter daily driver, and still be a fun toy. Drive it in automatic during the week, and then play with the paddle shifters when you want some fun! Modern automatics typically have more gears and actually get better MPG then the manual counterpart as well! It's also super easy to drive and anyone can drive a modern sportscar with an auto quite fast! Biggest drawback of an automatic is that they can get boring. While there are many benefits, depending on how you'll drive the car, you could get bored having an auto. I ended up selling my auto Supra because I missed a manual and got bored with it. Manuals offer one major benefits. Which is the fun factor. Simple like nothing else and really let you be connected to the car and its just a blast in the right setting. Overall it's great to know that the Toyota Supra has such a good automatic that your still getting all of the fun out of the car, and many other automatic sportscars can be just as fun. But if your sportscar is more of a play car, the manual will just be a blast!

What most people dont understand is that ZF8 transmission is straight GODLY ! Theres a reason why its in 10+ other car brands that have the same transmission

I have a 2023 Supra A91 6MT. Trust me the Automatic Supra is slightly faster than the Manual, but the Auto is not engaging or as fun. The Manual is not worth it if you are in a lot of traffic in big cities. Get an Auto if it's a daily in the city. Get a Manual if it's a fun weekend, date night, canyon cruiser, etc type of car. I have no regrets at how rewarding my Manual Supra is.

I bought a 6 speed M/T Scion FRS when they first came out. Didn’t even know how to drive a manual at the time so it was fun getting it off the lot to say the least haha, but I had fun with it. Now that I’m older and about to hit midlife crisis age 39 pushing 40, I’m thinking of upgrading to one of these. Driving my Scion has been a bit of a pain lately though as I live in Honolulu and traffic is terrible to say the least. It’s nice to know I wouldn’t be losing out if I decide on the auto. Still undecided though.

Recently got in an accident and totaled my 2021 AT Supra. When I bought the car the manual didn’t exist but now I have the option of either transmission. This video really helped but I’m still super split on which one to get as it is my daily but when I had the AT I did long for a manual.

Couple points you forgot for the manual.
1 - 6mt Supra should hold value better than the Auto due to limited supply and higher demand.
2 - 6mt is annoying if you put drinks in the cup holder. - This contributes to your point on practicality

Another thing you didnt touch on but is a reason for the performance difference, is the boost. When you shift in the 6mt car you interrupt power and therefore boost. The car takes time to re-build boost in-between shifts. Its not much time but it all adds up. In the Auto there is no loss of boost or power so the performance difference grows incrementally.

Agree with your other points, nice video.

How is the gear spacing on the manual? Do all gears seem to pull pretty hard or did the gear the manual transmission poorly?

GR86 is my first manual, I got it because I wanted to enjoy driving, and it has fit the bill. It has me to the point where the next car I get will be a manual also. The engagement just makes you look forward to driving every day, which used to be the opposite for me.

I've had manuals, including a Mustang GT.

I'm currently driving a 2022 BMW M240i xdive. The BMW M240i xdrive, has basically the same BMW engine and ZF trans as the GR Supra automatic. I can honestly say after experiencing the "unbelievable" ZF 8-speed auto, I would never get a Supra with a manual, even if it was just a weekend fun car.

As you say, when shifting the BMW ZF auto (or in this case the Supra auto) in manual mode, it's much faster and has much quicker shifts than the manual. And that added performance from the auto just equates to "more driver fun". And in my book, more performance and more fun, by default, equates to more car and driver/driving engagement.

The automatic's better MPGs and being the better daily are just icing on the cake, which I would gladly give up if the manual was faster and better performing – but it isn't.

Very good video. Do you think in the long run the manual Supra will hold a higher resale value than the automatic Supra?

If you DID have to drive the manual Supra in stop and go traffic, would it be tiresome? Is the clutch heavy? I’m also split between the 2 transmissions. Leaning more towards the manual tho.

I'm about to put the trigger on the 2024 45th anniversary edition. My dealer has one but its auto. I was looking for the manual but I live in Atlanta and traffic is horrible here and I remember how much of a pain a manual can be in bumper to bumper traffic.

Now that you’ve had it for a little, Have you noticed any slipping or jerkiness from 1st to 2nd? Any issues with excess rev hang in any gear? Any complaints about the clutch, gear engagement or rev matching?

A Stratosphere blue in 6spd will be mine in a few weeks. My last manual was a 993 & it was brilliant in its own way. The physical emotional connection is hard to describe to someone who's never driven one. In this day & age of technology sometimes its cool to take a step back.

How does the on-off throttle response feel in the manual vs auto? Is the manual much tighter? In other worse, how is the drive train slop/lash?

I used to be all about the manuals, the autos have gotten so good I stopped caring about the manuals, too many draw backs.

I would probably get automatic because of city life. Excellent video man thank you.

For me, with manual, the car is part of you, and with automatic, you are part of the car.

Do you have the active sound design BimmerCoded out in your manual?
