I remember that incident. It was Malaysia-based Air Asia so it's quite likely the pilot was a Malaysian Muslim. It's quite normal for a Muslim to think of asking people to pray when in difficulty and I thought when I heard the report that the pilot did exactly the right thing.

The co-pilot deserves credit as well. Even in the unlikely event he doesn't do anything, it's just the fact that he's there to support the pilot in any way.

This happened to me over Trinidad, the pilot didn’t tell us to pray but he told the flight staff to prepare for evasive maneuvers and they were yelling at everyone “sit down! Put your seatbelts on!”
