Africa has many straight borders because European powers drew them on maps in the 1800s to establish their claims to the continent:
1. The Berlin Conference
In 1884–1885, European powers met in Berlin to draw up the borders of most African countries.

2. Arbitrary boundaries
The borders were drawn without regard for the cultural, religious, or ethnic divisions of the people living there.

3. Superimposed boundaries
The borders created were "superimposed" on the existing cultural, religious, and ethnic divisions.

4. Separating colonies
The borders were drawn to separate European colonies.

These borders are still in place today, and have had deadly consequences. For example, the Caprivi Strip was created by European diplomats to gain territory without conflict with other European neighbors. The Caprivi Strip is now known as the Zambezi region.

In 1964, independent African states agreed to keep the colonial borders to avoid conflict. However, at least 177 ethnic groups are split in two or more states.
