AstraZeneca vaccine withdrawn! Antivaxxers lose the plot!

The AstraZeneca vaccine was recently withdrawn from sale worldwide. A number of media outlets as well as antivaxxers claimed that this was owing to side effects like blood clots. This is not true. Dr Susan Oliver and Cindy the dog go back to the science and show that the real reason was more mundane.

I was a medical student in Papua New Guinea in the Nineties and I can assure you that there are still many diseases there that we don't have here in Australia or in equivalent countries due to both vaccination and accessible medical help. It would be eye-opening to the anti-vaxxers and anti-science people to spend some time there. Or Nepal. Or [insert name of country].

Thank you for another great video that was very well explained. There also seems to be a backlash against non clinical interventions by right wing press, politicians and economists. How quickly they forget the scenes of very high numbers of people dying in hospitals and of people clapping health care workers.

When I was about 17 my then girlfriend had such a violent reaction to taking ibuprofen she was vomiting blood and was hospitalised for about 5 days. She needed a number of units of blood and was as weak as a kitten for around 2 weeks. The bottom line is there are potential side effects to even the safest meds and there is no way to tell if or how badly someone will be affected. We just have to hope drug companies and regulators get the balance the best they can. Tragic for those that suffered of course and my thoughts are with their families as it is with the scores more that lost their lives to covid. Personally speaking, out of my extended family and friends I do not know of anyone that suffered more than the sniffles and an achy arm from any of the vaccines, AZ included.
