On the final night of the Democratic National Convention, Vice President Kamala Harris formally accepted her party’s nomination for president.
The moment was historic. Harris is the first Black woman and first person of South Asian descent to accept a major party presidential nomination.
Harris said she accepted the nomination “on behalf of every American regardless of party, race, gender or the language your grandmother speaks. … On behalf of everyone whose story could only be written in the greatest nation on Earth.”
After quickly ascending to the top of the Democratic ticket in a matter of weeks, Harris could also become the first woman to be elected in U.S. history.
“I promise to be a president for all Americans,” she said. “You can always trust me to put country above party and self. To hold sacred America's fundamental principles from the rule of law to free and fair elections to the peaceful transfer of power. I will be a president who unites us around our highest aspirations.”
Harris’ speech is her first official chance to offer her vision for the country to voters. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz formally accepted the vice presidential nomination the day before.
