📢Interesting facts:
Burek is an integral part of the gastronomic culture of the Balkans. Although it is traditionally eaten as a snack, with the obligatory yogurt, the younger population often consumes it as a welcome means of satisfying hunger when returning from a night out.
Then there is usually someone who needs to inform others that burek can only be made of meat, and that everything else is pie.
Niš - the birthplace of "our" burek
Burek came to the territory of the former Yugoslavia at the end of the 15th century, when a recipe for "round burek" was created in Niš. The recipe for the modern round burek was developed in 1498 by the famous Turkish baker Mehmed Oglu from Istanbul.
Niš has thus earned the title of "ancestral homeland of the Balkan burek", and since 2004 the Buregdžijada event has been held there, where in 2011 the smallest but also the largest burek in the world was baked. The smallest was baked in a beer cap, and the largest had an area of 8 square meters and weighed 200 kg. Unfortunately, the organizers did not have the funds to pay for the trip to the officials of the Guinness Book of Records, who would confirm their success.
