Nerdy Privacy-Focused Discord Alternatives!

Показать описание
Sometimes my viewers ask me to look into the nerdiest things. And today is the day I finally cave in and review nerdy Discord alternatives from the perspective of a normie Discord user.

Note, I didn't talk about guilded because I already talked about it like 2 times and it's definitely not as nerdy as these alternatives.

What makes these alternative Discord clients nerdy? Well they are free and open source software (FOSS) and have an unfathomable amount of flexibility for people who know how to use it. I am not one of those people.

Time to make an encrypted open source alternative to discord and then get depressed realizing no money.

I've never met this man. I've never talked to this man before in my life but for some reason hearing him call me his little sweet heart and going "mwah" really made my day. God I need to touch grass.

Element is in the process of adding custom emoji support and custom themes. Last I checked they were almost done with the custom emoji support.

I just want to say before your videos I've never seen someone use browser tab groups so effectively, and it's incredibly satisfying seeing you use them.

The tags feature is actually really cool! I really hope discord does something about this!

BTW the German military is also using Matrix/their own version of Element, so this should reassure that the messenger is *very* secure. (They are listed on the website, also shown in the video)

On Matrix you need to manually enable E2E encryption in your rooms or it will be unencrypted. In DMs it's automagically enabled. Also Element loads really slow when you are in a lot of rooms.

A big advantage of matrix is also that you can speak with people from different platforms, you have bridges for instagram, whatsapp, signal, discord... so you can regroup all your conversation in one plateform.

Revolt seems to have incredible potential. Just end to end encryption and the ability to donate in beam and it seems perfect

8:27 This is sort of misleading, because Matrix federates, and Revolt doesn't. The difference is: *you can message anyone from any matrix homeserver, from your own matrix homeserver, and you can join a room hosted on any matrix homeserver, from your own matrix homeserver*. Revolt doesn't do that — if I'm on my own Revolt instance, and someone else is on the official Revolt instance, I can't talk to them, or join their servers.

I use the fediverse (mastodon) and most people I know use matrix/element. It just works and is privacy focused, which most of the people on the fediverse like their privacy

Love revolt personally prefer how customizable it is and the similarities to discord, waiting for screen sharing then it's perfect

As a year-long happy Matrixian, this vid was preettyyyy goood, was a nice overview. I approve, though you overlooked that other homeservers can set the filesize to whatever they want. :P
I am glad that ya mentioned Miitrix though btw.

U actually can have custom emoji and stickers in matrix! In element last time i checked u could make emoji packs, while in other matrix clients u can just straight up make your own emoji locally

I think Element isn't really an alternative to Discord. It has the server features but its more like an own messanger or maybe an alternative to Slack

Element is actually pretty great for working with clients (which makes sense since it's geared towards businesses). You can have clients in one room and have separate spaces for individual client interactions nested within that room. That's fantastic and keeps everything organized. ❤

OMG! These two open source services are great! I made a video about Revolt that also covers bridging with Discord, btw.
