In my opinion: (I have never towed before so can't really speak)
1. He entered lockout while towing and the wing was unrecoverable, in his mind the only way to rectify this was by pulling excessive right brake.
2. He then let go of his right brake to release the tow, and the combination of the release of tow, the acceleration of the right wingtip due to him releasing it, the left weight shift, and the twisted left risers, sent him into a deep spiral very quickly.
3. Once he had entered the spiral (which was initially recoverable) his right hand was not on the brake due to releasing tow just before, and he fumbled to grab the right brake in time to exit the spiral.
4. Once he had grabbed the right brake, the glider was in a full spiral dive and would've taken too long to recover before hitting the ground.
5. He made the right call to throw the reserve when he did, and his quick descent rate allowed the reserve to open very quickly.

If in doubt, throw the reserve!

1. Why is nobody tellin the pilot, that he is going in a dangerous lockout position ( more than 20 degrees Angle) ? 2. Why does the pilot give no feedback to the winch, to pull less or Stop, so he can release?... Two persons were sleepy here, winch operator and the pilot

Right brake handle got stuck in the riser, after releasing the tow line. Pilot recognized brake was stuck the only options with such little time is to throw reserve parachute.
So amazing see a quick response save another life! Great job pilot!

I did not read ALL 187 comments, but so far no one seems to point out that from the very start, the shadow of the wing on the ground shows a huge deviation from "being on the line". The pilot and the winch operator should have seen that from before the video even starts, and it is a wonder what the ()#/&)(" they were thinking continuing the tow?!? Ofcourse it ended in lockout.

The fact that "the wing turned towards the forest" was just the last part of the bad situation. The wing should have been pointed straight along the line from the start, which would be 30 degrees more to the right when the video starts.

Anyway... glad you survived and lived to tell the tale 🙂

The only thing I can see is a lack of training and as a result unsureness followed by fear and giving up. You gave up my friend! That´s not an option! What makes me happy is that the vid is a year old and you are much better now... .. . 👍😉

Late decision on releasing from tow (could decide 5sec earlier). You should pull your tow-release handle WITHOUT throwing the brakes (22s). Because of that and wing position right wing side got sppeed and went to spiral. Good decision on throwing reserve, a lot of luck. Thanks for sharing!

I was watching the shadow of the glider on the ground, which progressively became close to 90 degrees from the direction of tow. However, the pilot had deep right brake pulled the entire time too. I'm really not sure how the glider was pointed so far off axis with that much brake applied - it was like he was unable to steer it back on track.

I'm glad you survived that crash!

Looks like a lockout and you had already started to stall and sink. Nice flight park, how long is the grass runway? Haven’t seen a lockout in a PG before but seen them in HG and that’s what it looked like to me.

Lots of comments and suggestions already. Great job pulling the reserve when you did! The only thing I would add is to be more assertive to change direction when necessary, before things get out of hand.

Great save, nobody hurt, lessons learned. Nice job!

I have never done this before, but I am guessing the problem is lack of practice disconnecting with the left hand

I can also see at 27 secs your left brake lines is under the speed bar. Pre flight line checks. Also what is this wing you are flying? it has trimmers were the trimmers set properly before launching?

Why were you so far off the center line? I just dont understand that

It’s not only your fault mate. Winch operator should slow down when you go out of centre. If I may suggest something. You use to much brake. Short and gentle “pumps”, and weight shifting. I like to put one leg on winch line (relax mode on) so even when I’m looking up to check my glide position (always parallel) I fell every turn. Do you have a full video somewhere?
