Queens of the Stone Age frontman Joshua Homme and guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen perform a stripped-back version of 'Train in Vain (Stand by Me)' by The Clash. This performance was featured as part of A Song for Joe - a two hour virtual event celebrating Clash frontman, Joe Strummer on what would've been his 68th birthday. The live stream also acted as a fundraiser for #SaveOurStages, the live music industry’s campaign to ensure the continued existence of independent music venues after the COVID-19 pandemic subsides.

My dearest cousin showed me The Clash, his favorite band, when I was around 10-11 years old. He was 13 years older than me. My first listen was to Career Opportunities. Man, I was instantly hooked. The speed, Joe´s voice, the guitar, lyrics regarding social equality and justice. Loved The Clash ever since, I´m 29 now.

My cousin sadly passed away in 2022 due to COVID, leaving a wife and two baby boys behind. I haven´t been able to listen to a complete Clash song since he died. My throat bottles up, there´s a knot in my stomach, so I just skip to the next song in my playlist. Even my fingers are trembling as I type this.

Thank you Queens for returning my ability to listen to The Clash again with a huge f*cking smile on my face, and grateful to have spent those cherished moments discovering music with my cousin .

Great song, probably the Clash's best, which is ironic because they considered themselves a political band. I like this little video; about as stripped down as possible, but what makes it cool is the revolving camera effect.
