Queens of Stone Age guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen stopped by Reverb and we had him critique our QOTSA #PotentPairings video. How close did we get to his sound?

His smile when he heard auto pilot just made me so happy

"Wow, Autopilot. It's been awhile."
That slight bit of sadness in his voice.

Hearing Troy keep saying less gain, single coil, and keep it clean really made me change how I listen and attempt to play QOTSA. Damn good.

Troy and Josh are a vastly underrated guitar duo. Those guys are tight, Tight, TIGHT. If you play guitar....then you know.😉👍🏼

This was such a cool idea to get Troy's opinion on the authenticity of the tones. I know it'd be difficult to get more people from the bands you guys have covered in the reverb studio, but I'd love to see more of these.

He points out something a lot of musicians don’t get. The music overall is what constitutes the heaviness. A heavy rhythm and bass can fool you into thinking a guitar part is cranked with distortion when more than likely it’s cleaner than you think. Queens, SOAD, and even Zeppelin are great examples

"He has got to flip that pickup switch to the neck position though... for sure" very polite Troy

More videos of Troy critiquing anything, in general, would be awesome

Cheeky Troy.

RIP Mark Lanegan. Forever missed as can be told by watching this… I came for tones and left with feels…

I appreciate that you guys didn't just go with all of their standard hits and chose some underrated QOTSA songs like Auto Pilot and Another Love Song that have really unique guitar sounds, showing some love for the band. Great video

Overall they did pretty well, but he's right (obv) that a lot had a bit too much gain. People always mistakenly think QOTSA are a fuzz-based band but most of their stuff is way cleaner than you'd expect. They play really loud to get their sound

Troy Van Leeuwen is a rockstar. Stellar musician and his humility shines through here. Love these 'watching' videos.

It’s so cool to have Troy do this thing… I like when musicians give credit even just for the effort it took to get there.

Still one of the best videos if not the best video for me that Reverb has put out. So cool they got hold of him! Its so interesting that he can hear all these minute details but also that he's got a "close enough" attitude in the right places.

I like how amused Troy was by a lot of these and how he said the actual tones were more clean than actually 'gain-y'

This video gave me a gigantic smile. Please make this a regular feature. Super interesting and informative.

Damn, the years have been kind to Troy !  Would love to see him doing an interview about Failure sometime.
