Born and raised in DR Congo, I cannot see this project happening, mostly due to corruption, and lack of suitable infrastructure to support the construction phases alone. I also feel DR Congo is one place where the ecosystem is kept in tact, thankfully due to lack of year-round roads that would provide better access to lumber and other land-clearing resources. We need more untouched forests to absorb our carbon pollution.

With that many governments involved, the corruption would set a world record. Africa being what it is, after the looting, there may not be enough allowed for maintenance.

technically, the 700 ft depth of the river is really near where it empties into the ocean. An underwater canyon starts right before the the mouth of the congo at the atlantic ocean, then it continues past the mouth towards the edge of the continental shelf.

The Grand Inga Dam will surely power a lot of countries in Africa.

I remember a Soviet project of Tidal Power Station. It was planned to be built in Eastern Russia in Magadan region at Penzhinskaya Bay. Estimate cost is 60bn$ at the time (or maybe today) and power generation about 100 GW. 5 times more than Three Gorges Dam
