Top 10 largest Dams in Africa
Hello Displorers, welcome to another informative video presented to you by Displore and thanks for watching. In this video, we shall look at top 10 largest dams in Africa.A dam is a barrier that stops or restricts the flow of water or underground streams. Reservoirs created by dams not only suppress floods but also provide water for activities such as irrigation, human consumption, industrial use, aquaculture, and navigability. Hydropower is often used in conjunction with dams to generate electricity. A dam can also be used to collect water or for storage of water which can be evenly distributed between locations. Dams generally serve the primary purpose of retaining water and the earliest known dam is the Jawa Dam in Jordan, dating to 3,000 BC.

When people think about grand and large water projects, Africa is always not the first place that comes to mind but some of the world’s largest and biggest dams that cost several millions of dollars are found in Africa. The dams were primarily built for economic value and are classified regarding the capacity the water their reservoirs can hold, the height, length and width of the dam. With a massive generating capacity of 22.5 GW, the Three Gorges Dam, located at Yangtze River, China is the biggest hydro dam in the world but here are the largest dams found in Africa.

9.The Bujagali Dam in Uganda - 250mw
The Bujagali Dam in Uganda is located on the Nile River close to Lake Victoria and generates 250MW. The dam has been operating since 2012 and is the biggest hydroelectrical dam in Uganda at the time is was commissioned. The construction of two new dams, Karuma und Ayago, could change this but this would mean the resettlement of thousands of farmers and the flooding of protected areas. The estimated cost of the dam and power plant was $800 but an additional $62million was spent on building a high voltage transmission line from Jinja to Kawanda near Kampala.

10. The Tekeze Dam, Ethiopia, 300MW
Tekezé Dam is a double-curvature arch dam located on the border of Amhara and Tigray region of Ethiopia. It is situated on the Tekezé River, a tributary of the Nile that flows through one of the deepest canyons in the world.CWGS was contracted to build the Tekezé Dam and the hydroelectric project was completed in February 2009. Its final cost was $360 million, which was $136 million over budget. The powerhouse contains four 75 MW turbines, generating 300MW of electricity. A 105 kilometres transmission line connects it to the national grid at Mekelle. At the time of its completion, the 188metres Tekezé Dam was Africa's largest double-curvature arch dam and is the highest dam in Africa. However, the dam has a productivity of just 300 MW, so it only generates one-twentieth of the hydro-energy produced by its big brother the Grand Renaissance Dam.

9. The Kainji Dam in Nigeria – Capacity - 760MW
Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. Construction of the dam was carried out by Impregilo, a consortium of Italian Civil Engineering Contractors, designed by Joint Consultants, Balfour Beatty and Nedeco, and began in 1964 to be completed in 1968. The total cost was estimated at$209 million equivalent to about $1.3 billion in 2019 dollars, with one-quarter of this amount used to resettle people displaced by the construction of the dam and its reservoir, Kainji Lake. Most of the structure is made from earth, but the 65metres centre section, housing the hydroelectric turbines, was built from concrete. The dam was designed to have a generating capacity of 960 megawatts; however, only 8 of its 12 turbines have been installed, reducing the capacity to 760 megawatts. The dam generates electricity for all the large cities in Nigeria while some of the electricity is sold to the neighbouring country of Niger.

You information is detailed. I love the fact that you even mentioned that 🇳🇬 Nigeria shares her hydrological power to neighbouring nations.

So Africa's largest lake by volume, formed by the Kariba Dam Wall, with a combined hydro-electric capacity of 2130MW (Kariba North at 1080MW, Kariba South at 1050MW) is not on your list.

The Grand Inga Dam is a series of seven proposed hydroelectric power stations at the site of the Inga Falls, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. If built as planned, the 40-70 GW project would be the largest power station in the world. that is 2 timesThree Gorges dam in China
