Tooth sensitivity is a sudden sharp but temporary flash of pain and it happens when the tooth is suddenly getting exposed to air to certain foods, sweet or cold. What causes tooth sensitivity is abnormal brushing techniques with undue amount of force with hard bristles could wear down the surfaces of the teeth exposing the underling dentin, thus enhancing sensitivity. Some patients can also have chronic gum disease where the gums have receded exposing the tooth root, causing sensitivity. Teeth that has fine cracks in them that collects bacteria and plaque. This causes inflamed pulp that also causes sensitivity. Para functional habits like clenching and grinding can also contribute to these symptoms. Long term use of non prescription mouthwashes and continuous consumption of acidic food play a big role in enhancing sensitivity.
What are the home remedies in overcoming tooth sensitivity? I would say to use a fluoridated toothpaste, use a soft bristled tooth brush and get yourself a mouth guard that acts like a helmet in your tooth protecting it from the harmful effects of clenching and grinding. In extreme cases you may require the guidance of a dental professional to help you and he may help you with a crown or an inlay. The root canal process is the last resort to treat sensitivity. It is important to choose a dental professional to understated the underlying reasons for your sensitivity before treating this as this would go a long way in alleviating the pain that causes sensitivity.

My dental issues were a CALCIUM DEFICIENCY. I was not deficient in fluoride. I did not need sensodyne…I needed 2 - 8 oz. glasses of milk per day. Wala! No more tooth pain. I believe this also stopped my nighttime and daytime teeth clenching that I had been suffering from for 15 years.

I had mild gum recession & had sensation when i drink anything cold or any sweet items. I went to dentist, he advised me to fill gums. So i agreed. After a month there started right side face extreme severe pain, can't even touch face, can't even brush, can't even eat, can't even drink, can't even talk. I am in a difficult situation after gum filling. I went to a neuro surgeon, he took MRI of brain, MRI normal. He said no problem. I really suspect the dentist damaged my right side upper teeth nerve which is making my life hell.
What is the solution to this problem?
I am really exhausted in life.

if for instance the causes are over brushing and grinding, is the coating damaged for life or does it grow back if the causes are addressed? Thank you

I had very mild gum recession and mild sensitivity....I could eat and chew everything.

After going to a MDS dentist here in Noida she forced me to get my insissors canines and premolars covered with dental cement .
At that point I felt ok but after 2 days, my the dental cement covering of premolars started chipping off and i had bad itch in all my tooth...I went to the dentist again and she smeared dental cement again....Again it chipped off in two days and pain and extreme sensitivity started in most teeth (which was not there before ) ....I followed up with her and she told pain will subside eventually or else go for RCT for 5 tooth .
For the whole dental procedures she charged me Rs 45000 in total till now for cementing. She also drilled a hole in one of my teeth and filled it and its paining there also now. There was no discomfort or cavity there but she advised if she doesnt fill it up a larrge cavity might form soon ...I never felt any discomfort or sensitivity in that teeth earlier.

Here its 50 days over pain has increased significantly ( in all cemented teeth ) and dental cement on two premolars came out have 200 times more pain and distress now compared to what was there before dental procedures. I cant even chew with the teeth whereever the dental cement is there. I called her up again and she responded saying RCTs would cure my problem permanently .
I m little frowned because earlier I did not have any problem and I went to her for mild gum recession and now my quality of life is worse that what it was before taking the dental procedures. One thing is my gum recession is significantly reduced by simple salt water rinse for 50 days ...But my pain is worse than before.

Its ridiculous that the doctors do not own up to the patients outcome. Is this what dental procedures lead to ?

I m planning to visit a different dentist in the coming week.
