As Europe’s biggest gas supplier and Western Europe’s largest oil producer, Norway plans to keep producing fossil fuels for decades to come, recently approving more than $18 billion in oil and gas investments.
At the same time, it has pledged to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 2030 by 55% from 1990 levels and to be carbon neutral by 2050. A key part of Norway’s plan to meet those goals is a multibillion-dollar carbon capture and storage project utilizing the North Sea.
The country has also spearheaded a global initiative to provide financial aid to countries that agree to slow tropical deforestation.
Espen Barth Eide, a former foreign minister and defense minister in previous Labour Party cabinets, speaks with Reuters Oslo Bureau Chief Gwladys Fouche about the contradictions inherent in the country’s climate ambitions and its role in an equitable energy transition.
