She Tried Mountain Bike Commuting - How Does it Compare to a Road Bike?

How is bike commuting by mountain bike? I'll be talking about some of the pros and cons of commuting by mtb, as well as the differences between mountain bike commuting and road bike commuting during my daily commute to work.

Today my wife is trying out her new mountain bike on her bike commute to work for the first time. Although she's a daily bike commuter on her road bike and she's had this new bike for a while now, this is her first time using it on her commute.

Because the bike was still brand new, she didn't want to use it on her commute at first, but after trying the MTB on her commute compared to the road bike, I think she's a big fan now.

Let me know what you guys think as well in the comments! Is commuting by MTB better than a road bike or CX bike?

Thuong is such a trooper for doing this commute almost daily for 5 years. I think she really liked doing it on the MTB compared to the road bike too :)

Commuting by bike definitely keeps you fully immersed in the seasons. Commuting by car you’re in an air conditioned box and then when you get to work in an office it doesn’t feel like the time of year. In fact it’s usually the opposite. In summer it feels freezing and winter is stiflingly hot because they overcompensate with the AC.

I love commuting on a hardtail. I feel like a kid trying to jump every curb and gap around town. Definitely makes the commute more fun than my road bike, but so much more tiring.

The color coordination between Thuong's riding outfit is very fashionable and highly visible. Well done!

“Is that your coworker?”
“No, just another cyclist”
Exactly Thuong. I wave at other cyclists too.

Before your videos I didn’t know anything about commuting in Japan. Now it feels as if I have cycled in Japan. Thank you both 😀

I grew up in Saitama Ken in the 80's and 90's; cool to see these commuting videos of Japan...

Narration was excellent, Thuong's left turn signal and wave to other biker was nice. Cars turning left were scary. You both continue to be safe. :)

Thanks for the video. Every time I go to visit Beautiful Wife's family in Ise I'm surprised how fast the sun drops. On the other hand, a public holiday in Germany means just that: everything is closed except essential services which is nice: almost no traffic at all and everyone gets the day off.
The coldest I cycled in this year was -6; I was very glad when the sun came out.

Thuong-chan looks so happy with her new bike! :)
Riding in the dark may not be as video-friendly but it's still lovely imo. In my old job I'd do both my rides in the dark during the winter, it was always very peaceful (albeit a bit cold). Now my ride is considerably shorter so I get to ride with daylight through the year (mostly so now that it's still summer for me here).

Hey Man, I really like these videos of you both cycling around Town . I live in Greenwich SE London and used to commute to soho in central London on my bike, only around 7 miles each way what a pain in the winter, my route took me mostly along the River Thames so lots to see and very historical but windy in winter. Some was great as there are lots of old pubs to stop off at !

Great video, Cruise. Your videos keep getting better and better. And loving the mountain bike you got for your wife. Also, looking forward to checking out your wife’s YouTube walking channel. To both of you, keep up the phenomenal work, and so glad I found you both on here.

Very nice ride. I was surprised by how wide and nice the foot paths are in Japan. It's good that with proper infrastructure more people can ride instead of driving.

Commuting in MTB is actually safer, more comfortable and more practical than road bike.

The obvious advantages of MTB Vs Road Bikes for commuting are: You run Wider tyres with much larger contact surfaces and lower pressure. This offers far better grip and reduced braking distances in wet. Lower tyre pressure offers better comfort, lower puncture risks. And running full suspension not only offers way better comfort, you can easily deal with curbs and mount them easily to maintain smooth flow and higher average speeds. On sudden transitions to soft sandy surfaces where sealed surfaces disappears, you can still move on, instead of having to get off and push on a road bike. Even better, if you ride a eMTB with centre drive, if offers so much torque that makes hill climbs disappears and allows you to maintain and carry forward your momentum over undulating terrains and maintain higher average speeds.
I used to ride my road bike for commuting and covers 60kms per day. Now i switched to eMTB. The concept is similar to GT, being able to cover vast distances at high speed and comfort. It takes me just less than a hour to cover a 30km trip. So maintaining just over 40kmh+ average, similar to my road bike speed and slightly lower than my recumbent speed, but offering much better ride with the comfort of full suspension. And on flats, i can even keep up with cars doing around 50kmh. Yes, eMTB is the way to go! The battery gets charged by my full Offgrid solar so it is totally Green solution that is powered by the sun ☀️😂👍

Hey, new subscriber here. Love your videos. I used to love cycling to work every day (around 8 miles one way) until I was knocked off my bike (hit and run) and lost confidence and have not cycled since then. Watching your videos has given me incentive to buy a new bike and start cycling again though 😃

I always enjoy your channel. It is simply is realistic as to how most people ride and think about bikes and cycling.
