Safe and sustainable food packaging: understanding the micro- and nanoplastics challenge

Food packaging plays an important role in today’s food supply chains, but plastic packaging and processing equipment is a known source of human exposure to micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs). Scientists within the AURORA research consortium are working to better characterize the types of MNPs that can be present in foodstuffs and understand how MNPs can affect early-life human health. This includes developing new methods to detect nanoplastics in human blood as well as launching a dietary intervention.
