Paige introduces a piece of punctuation called the semicolon; this punctuation can link closely related independent clauses together in a sentence.

Punctuation on Khan Academy: Punctuation is the collection of squiggles, dots, and lines that we use to separate sentences and their parts. Is a question mark punctuation? Yes, and so is an exclamation point!

if anyone is struggling with Semicolons please read by tip:

first, learn about Comma splices. Then only move on to Semicolons. It made it so easier for me.

For some bizarre, but funny reason, this came to my mind:
Has anyone ever seriously thought about the character, "semi-colon" since "semi" means half, or 50%? _Seriously._ *Why* is it called a "semi-colon" ["half-colon"] anyway? The bottom 'comma' portion clearly uses more space than the the upper, 'colon' [plus SPACE] part therefore *it's MORE than just 'semi' [half]* ? Shouldn't it be more accurate to call it a "comma plus dot, " or, a "dotted comma" like we say, "dotted 'i'?"

Here's a question for ya! In this passage, would the punctuation after 'football' be a colon or a semicolon? And would the punctuation after 'stretching' be a semicolon or a comma?

As a preschooler and early grade-schooler, my parents tried to get me to play almost every sport except for football; my team won a little league baseball championship, but I didn’t like it; I played a season of basketball in which I don’t think I scored a single point; I quit after the first day of both soccer and karate, because I didn’t have the fortitude to withstand their respective running and stretching, etc.

I would think that the one after 'football' would be a colon, but there were other sports not mentioned in the list, so to me, that would mean a colon is not appropriate. As for the one after 'stretching, ' it seems unnecessary to use a semicolon to introduce 'etc.' Would you agree?

All helps is appreciated! :)

Can we use colon instead of semi colon in the first example:
I don't want to ride the Mega Sky Coaster: I'm afraid of heights, and that ride sounds terrifying!

when do we use however, how do we know if we are going to use semi colon or however

I'd recommend avoiding the use of the transitional word; the semicolon makes it redundant.

I don't agree with the Mega Sky Coaster example. The second clause is a compound sentence which does not equal the simple construction of the first clause. This example would be much better as two separate sentences because of the difference in sentence construction.

i simply cannot figure out why a semicolon is required before however rather than just a comma. 😑

How is the second sentence a independent clause? That sentence can't stand my itself making it a dependent...
