Oslo isn't a cheap city to live. I asked Norwegians what the housing costs are like in Norway's capital city.

"$500 a month is quite expensive"
*Laughs in Seattle then cries in Seattle*

5000 NOK is about the cheapest you can get for a room/apartment in Oslo. I bet most of these are students, which means they may have access to student housing. Most people I know pay around 10 000 nok per month.

for 5000 a month in oslo you pretty much get a room with that fits a bed and not much more, then comes electricity, heating and internet on that.

I lived in one of the cheapest cities in Canada . A basic very small studio, not in a safe neighborhood apartment in 2024 minimum $980 a one bedroom $1300 and if you want something in a decent neighborhood +amenities = 1500-2000$ for a one bedroom

I'm paying 1400 dollars for a 2 bedroom in Durham NC and that's on the low end in a crime ridden area and trash everywhere.

These people are talking about student shacks. If you want to rent a proper appartment with 2 bedrooms, kitchen, living room, bathroom etc its way higher. Most of these people are renting single rooms, or live in a student apartment with more people.

Norway is expensive?!! Compared to what, exactly? Zimbabwe? Tunisia?

I would LOVE to be able to pay $1, 400 for a one room apartment in San Francisco.

And I bet Oslo doesn’t have people fleeing the city because of used hypodermic needles on the children’s playground, feces everywhere and cars getting broken into by smash-and-grab teams.

Think about that.

I live in the middle of no where, Tennessee and rent here is easily 700 for the worst apartment in the most dangerous areas..

Sad, but our generation will never have a house 🏠... Only live with friends

I live in Oslo, close to centrum. 3 rooms, separate kitchen and balcony. 19500 nok/ around 1750 $.
Heating and electricity is paid separately - 1500nok ( 130$) in addition.

Not bad considering it takes Norway like 5 years to equal one day of gun violence in the U.S ! plus the healthcare system is way better, no wonder Norway was voted one of the top countries where people are happy ..

I’m pretty sure they’re talking about krone (nok)… 1 USD = 10.57 nok

It's $2k CAD for a 1bdrm, probably more if you want it above ground - anywhere near Toronto 🇨🇦

As someone who is trying to escape NYC because of the high cost of living, I can see Norway is NOT the most ideal country to run to if saving money is my goal.

You can a fairly decent apartment for around 900 dollars in Oslo. It’s not cheap but at least it’s not a closet for the most part. Mine is big enough for 1 person

People need to stop comparing Oslo to global cities. Oslo is a kind of provincial city in a provincial region that doesn't have multinational companies that attract workers from everywhere who inflate rent prices (like Seattle)
