Make no mistake: while Duterte speaks of getting in bed with China, his military isn't buying it (it's not just regular Filipinos). He's walking a fine line here and he knows it. Opinion polls still show a high approval rating for the United States compared to China.

Please don't paint broad strokes here; not all Filipinos like our President's coziness with the CCP.

I have noticed that Filipinos are kind of intimidated by China or just don't really care. For some strange reason, they don't go out and organize large crowds to protest at Chinese embassies. They will protest Duterte but not China. It seems to me that it's not just the government but the people also lack interest. There is no serious outrage anywhere. If a Western country would do what the Chinese are doing the whole country would be in an uproar. OFW would be protesting and holding huge rallies at embassies around the world. But China? Filipinos just basically give them a pass. Both the government and the citizens just don't care enough. it's fascinating how China plays out in a Filipino mind. It has its own physiology that I have difficulty making sense of. One Filipino man told me the reason the Chinese can get away with abuse is because Chinese people look like Filipinos. Really?
