Please join the CSIS Americas Program for an event exploring potential scenarios for Venezuela's upcoming elections.

The Maduro regime in Venezuela has taken several measures to subvert the upcoming presidential election, and as we approach the self-imposed election date of July 28, questions remain about whether the regime will allow the elections to take place, or whether it will seek to curtail participation or outright cancel the elections. In the last few months, the regime has disqualified key opposition figures from running, often on questionable legal grounds; it has harassed, arrested, and intimidated opposition leaders and activists; and it has been accused of tampering with voter registrations and manipulating voting procedures to favor pro-regime outcomes. Identifying potential scenarios that the regime could use to remain in power is essential to pre-bunk regime-fabricated narratives, especially as thousands continue to take the streets in support of the opposition. It is also important to discuss how the international community should respond to those scenarios where the regime remains in power.

This event will seek to assess and discuss the various scenarios that could unfold in the upcoming Venezuelan elections, with a focus on exploring the possibilities for a regime transition. It will also seek to provide a comprehensive understanding of the potential electoral outcomes, and the role of the international community in the process.

This event is made possible through general support to CSIS.

If the military did not do anything throughout the crisis in 2017-2019, why would they rise up now that there is food and toilet paper... hate to be pessimistic but I think FANB is not a resource the population can rely on.
