I found the key to beating GAS. I unsubscribed from over 200 photography channels and don’t feel the need to buy anything else. I spent approximately $50, 000 over the last 10 years and have had every camera from the Sony A1 down to the smallest point and shoot. I’ve had bridge cameras and at least three cameras from every manufacturer. I no longer have subscribed channels where I see 20 videos telling me I need to buy a lens or camera on launch day. I fought the urge but thought I needed to buy each one because the influencers said so. Now I just look for the occasional skill related video then shut down YouTube. If you have severe GAS, try unsubscribing. It works and I’m glad I did.

One great tip - Have a low paid job and a family to support. That way you don't have any money to spend on new gear. Problem solved!

Minimal system is the best. I shoot all of my event photography with just 2 Olympus E-M1 Mk 1 bodies with a 14-52mm on one, and a 50-200mm on a 1.4x converter on the other. 2 Bodies, 2 Lenses covering 28mm to 560mm. All fits in one very small Lowepro bag. People who say you can't shoot as a pro with micro 4/3 don't know what they are talking about.

One other thing to mention is to buy used gear, if at all possible. I recently sold three cameras that I no longer use now, and after quite a few years of ownership I got my money back. I did care for the equipment, but basically my photography with those cameras was free.

Very important point, well made. The most decisive factor behind good photography is either behind the camera or in front of it.

I always appreciate these kinds of videos. It can be hard to hear when you feel like chasing these one or two things might get you the "look" you want, when in reality what you have and some work on your craft will get you where you want to go.

Thank you!

Great topic!

From the footage I can only conclude that "more lenses" == "less hair", and there is no coming back from that!

Love this channel and I couldn't agree more. The longer I've been a photographer, the less into the latest and greatest gear I've become. I remember DigitalRev back in the day did a series called, Cheap Camera-Pro photographer. They gave a terrible, sometimes toy camera to a pro photographer for the day and told them to shoot with it. The results were always incredible, and really showed how important the skills of photography are over any gear.

Using a Fuji xpro 2 and the 16, 23, 35 1.4s and a 56mm 1.2 since the xpro 2 came out in 2016. No plan to “upgrade” anytime soon. It’s been my full time work horse that whole time. I will never be better than that camera.

I was in a creative slump with photography, and I recently read a book called, "House of Leaves." Now I have my fujifilm X-T3 around my neck everywhere I go and am newly invigorated. Inspiration can come in the most unlikely of ways.

George, you are not alone! We are all been fooled by all the hype from the manufacturers and retailers that we must have this, that and everything else. My big cupboard is full of photographic gear which are mostly junk, in the sense that I never use them. I have so many cameras (10+) because I keep convincing myself that getting the latest and greatest will re-energise my interest and go out and challenge myself. Totally fooled myself because, in the end my main camera is still my old and trusty E-M5 ii with a 12-40/2.8 zoom and I use this combo for most of my photo shoots. Join the club, George.

George, you always help to put things into perspective! As a hobbyist I love the collecting aspect of photography but you are so right we don't need so many overlapping systems, bodies, and lenses.

I never had this problem with photography gear because, as kid my parents couldn't afford a good camera. I learned it was either this camera or no camera. To make up for the lack of features and camera quality. I learned to be master at what i had to work with. I would have to make interesting props in the garden or travel to places to tell story with my photography. It made work harder at making good photos! Haha because my camera was very bad!

George, when you pulled out those 35mm lenses, I looked at my 50mm lens collection and thought, you've hardly even started. You're not trying hard enough yet 😂.

But I agree with you entirely. I've sold way more than I own and my main shooting kit is skimmed down. Simplicity just works better.

Great video, I related to just about everything you said. I have created a reminder to come back & view this again in a few weeks when I inevitably start thinking about buying new kit!

Just sold most my gear and bought a a6700 and 3 primes. It does everything I need and more extremely well and it’s simple enough to carry it but a chore. But then it’s just a hobby for me.
