Rare footage... E Papa is a song of return for those who were lost in the battle of Pai Marire in Moutoa it is an emotional narrative. It is an old Whanganui river song in the 1900’s or earlier. It was sung and made worldwide by The Herbs. The battle of Pai Marire in Moutoa was a battle that started in May 1864 in the adoption of faith, which has been predicted by the Taranaki prophet Te Ua Haumēne in 1862 regarding the ongoing battle of landloss.

However, this led to some Māori to support this ‘faith’ and the spread of messages caused others to doubt its civic resolute and assumed that it threatened the mana of individual iwi. Therefore, resulting in the conflict between supporters and non-supporters to break out in different parts of the North Island, including Whanganui. Even resulted in the lives of people during the war, including that of Waiai Te Patu, the Whanganui chief at the time.

This music video is a hearty one that reaches out and lets us viewers grasp the raw emotions of the performers and the story of the song sung to understand the Māori society as not only fierce but hearty in the songs that they produce and make to tell their story in their society and tribes. The song is about calling out for the returns of loved ones and the begging of relieving their pain if their presence is known and seen. Therefore, this song is critical in understanding the pain of these tribal people and their feelings through the lyrics.
