Why do the people in these stories always "run back to bed and pretend to be asleep" instead of calling the cops or doing something even remotely useful?

Edit: I believe windows are what you can open and glass panels are just there . No open.

I love the part about the mom seeing someone through the peep hole and letting out a blood curdling scream, because that’s definitely the normal reaction I give when I see anyone through the peep hole
