Following Bungie's Layoffs... What is the path forward for Destiny 2? What happens next?

In the wake of more layoffs by Bungie over 200 people have lost their jobs. What does this mean for Destiny 2? What does the path forward look like? Today I wanted to talk about all of this, including remembering some of the fine work of the Bungie Developers who were laid off, discussing the narrative impacts on Destiny's future content, talking about what this means for Destiny's future prospects in general and talking about whether I'll be changing my approach to covering the game.

The Witness (Pete Parsons) achieved The Final Shape after all (buying another vintage car)

It’s really disappointing seeing such an amazing expansion being followed by the people who made it being screwed over.

The fact Tobias Kwan, the man responsible for the designs of Rhulk, Nezarec, and the Dread was laid off was heartbreaking to learn. To learn thst the people who created my favorite bungie stories period are now gone breaks my heart.

It’ll go unnoticed by some but not monetising the video also shows how classy you are man. Genuinely lead by example in all you do when creating content whether that’s highlighting others, paying for art/ commission or just the overall message.

Knowing a lot of people will be interested knowing everyone is furious, it’s very easy to see it as a chance to and nobody would bat an eye but yeah man. Very classy

This quote from Tyson Green hits so different right now when thinking about how the team must be feeling:
"There's a line that emerged in Destiny 1 that wasn't planned for but it was very deliberate by the person who put it in the game, and it is very resonant for Destiny players and for me as a person. That line is "Guardians make their own fate." That still gives me goosebumps. For me, that has sort of become a touch point for the Destiny story. Again and again, external forces come and try to impose a fate upon you and humanity. And again and again, you show them that they can't do that. We make our own fate."

I hope they do.

Ok, I had no idea so many people who worked on Destiny for YEARS were laid off. I thought most were from their canceled projects and were newer hires.
Hearing how so many from the story/narration are gone really makes me think the story is going into hibernation or will be very poorly managed going forward AND makes me think Marathon isn't going to be very story-heavy.

As someone who has Warframed from basically the beginning (base Nova's release), the biggest asset that game has had is the fact that the studio, from the lowest-ranking dev to the highest ranking management, are invested in the game.

Not hearing Byf end it on See You Starside gave me chills. Pete Parsons has destabilized the entire community and franchise so he can bask in material indulgence along with the rest of Bungies top leadership. They all need to go asap.

Warframe warhammer and dnd have tons of lore and dedicaited fan bases that would be excellent for you byf. We all need a byf for our games and stories.

Hi Byf. I know you probably won't read this, but I just wanted to say...thank you for this, for your sentiments, your sympathy for those laid off, and your hopeful outlook.

So, so many other content creators (who all of course are entitled to opinions and perspectives) have made this all sound absolutely disastrous and apocalyptic for the future of the game. It's made me feel a bit depressed as a relatively new player, but your voice makes me feel more optimistic (if not happy with the situation).

I love your content, and can't wait to see the avenues you explore, as well as more of the Destiny content we know and love.

Again, thank you Byf ❤

Next expansion title gotta be Destiny 2: The Final employee or Destiny 2: Curse of Pete Parsons

Byf: "I'm going to continue being your Destiny Lore Nerd."

Me: You mean Destiny Lore Daddy.

I won't speak for anyone else. But, I will absolutely be here to continue listening to you tell stories. Your conveyance and understanding of the information is incredible.

I'm glad to see someone having some hope for the future.
We survived lightfall, the final shape still went through despite our doubts.
This game will not die if it still has players. It will die if we all walk away.
I'm unironically a gambit enjoyer, and there's a badge that describes my personal mentality, especially times like this in games and reality.
Never Say Die.

Hearing you mention ff14 and say it's worth your time warmed my heart.

Bungie Corporate throwing away arguably the best narrative talent in the industry and condemning the most successful live service to date to a slow whimpering end just so Parsons can extend his car collection fills me with melancholic rage.

The future of Byf is bright. No matter where you go dude, your content will be fine by me 🤘

Speaking of Warframe, as someone who is getting back into it, I would LOVE some lore videos from you on the latest content!

Byf you really left Warframe right before it got good and started investing heavy into the story. Rebb being in charge has drastically shaped the studio for the better and the game has never been more fun and interesting

There CANT be a path foreward. Not with this CEO basically sinking the entire company for his sick tastes of Material-over-responsibility.
