A quick comparison of what the game looked liked in early development vs what we got in the final release. Please note that the images used will look blurry as I could not find any High Quality versions of them.

Anyone curious about the tree removal, the devs while playtesting took notes saying the game's performance was so bad on the current hardware at the time it was unplayable.

Crazy how all those trees make beta feel so much more realistic

They removed many trees/plants to reduce game size and to boost performance.

This is fascinating. I like to think that the beta pictures could be what LS looked like in the 80s/90s/early2000s compared to 2013

Because of the low quality images, these beta images literally look like real life

0:35 that looks honestly really cool. No wonder i feel so uncanny in the game sometimes when i see just plane grass with no trees at all.

I like the more saturated look of the Beta, but what people seem to forget is that the game actually did used to look more saturated even after the original release. While it never quite looked like the Beta, GTA 5 for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 looks quite different when compared to later releases. I personally really like the deep, saturated look of the game on the 7th gen consoles. I'd love to see this same comparison, but with the Beta locations, then Playstation 3, then Playstation 4/5.

In 2013, the hardware of most consoles and computers should not be ignored. PS3 and Xbox 360 had 512MB of RAM and also still using HDD. Despite this, they provided a great gaming experience. Optimization at its best.

We have to remember the game was originally made for 360 and ps3. Alot of things and features had to be removed to compensate

the old terrain and nature looked so much better

So removed so many trees. Must of been hard on the performance

It's amazing what they thought they could accomplish, and how the PS3 limited their vision. Some of the environments looked better in beta in my opinion, like the palms trees in the first image.

Beta version looks more natural. Actually, i always preferred the look from the first GTA V trailer, it looked so nice and atmospheric.

Major differences between the atmosphere of the beta versus final release:
-The lighting is HELLA realistic, like one of those lighting mods you see on Nexus Mods or Patreon or something. I'm assuming it was changed to the familiar vibe we all know and love due to performance issues
-There is a suspicious lack of palm trees in the final version. Hopefully that gets fixed with GTA 6 and so Vice City will actually feel like a game set in Florida lmao
-The minimap is more akin to GTA 4, however I can see it was split into 3 sections still so I believe Rockstar had the idea of special abilities since the inception of GTA 5
Final note: Just by looking at this beta, I know the game itself ran at like 15 fps on a good day but I still wouldnt pass up a chance to play it. I bet it'd be so weird to drive around Los Santos before most of the buildings and highways were placed down

Am I the only one that thinks it looks... hotter in the beta? Like the temperature looks like real LA summer heat.

Had to cut it down a lot to make it work on 360 and PS3. It'll be interesting to see how the next GTA will be given multiple generations of systems will have been released in between.
