Lesley Gore - You Don't Own Me | Reaction!

Lesley Gore's been on my mind, and I've never heard this song, so here we are. While this was written by 2 men, Gore took it and made it her own. You could tell she believed the words she was singing. She gave it life. This was a powerful listen even now, but I can't imagine how influential it was back in 1963.
Thanks for watching!

Always loved the hook of this song. Lesley really belts it out. Joan Jett does a great version too.

If my memory serves me, she suffered with chronic stage fright whilst also hiding the fact she was gay, which would have been unthinkable back then, so she slipped away from the public eye. Oddly enough, her story mirrors that of her British contemporary Dusty Springfield. I was surprised to see you haven't reacted to Dusty yet. "Son of a Preacher Man" would be a great starting place! It's from the album Dusty in Memphis, her opus that is consistently ranked among the greatest albums ever.

Such a great song and a great voice.

You should listen to "It's My Party", one of her other big hits. But back to back with the 1982 synthpop cover version by Dave Stewart (not that one) and Barbara Gaskin - which is so very 1982 (but I still love it).

Too bad the sentiment in this song isn't even influential now. It's still ridiculous and tragic how much crap women have to put up with for simply not being men. Kudos to you for this reaction. It won't do your channel much good, but I applaud you for mentioning "feminism" without sniggering or rolling your eyes.
