Hi Derek, my favourite tool is one i found in a junk shop about 25 years ago. It is an adjustable gauge which i use for cutting glass strips millimetre perfect every time. it saves a huge amount of time when making leaded lights and borders. Its so simple and has 4 parts. Comprising of a steel rod with a sliding stop at 90 degrees to the rod. the stop is attached by way of a machine screw with a hole to accept the steel rod and a furled nut to allow it to be tightened precisely. It is used in conjunction with a normal glazier’s straight edge to cut against. Simply set the stop it to the required distance according to the cut line. First, place the stop on the edge of the pane of glass. Second, place the end of the rod against the straight edge. Third, take the gauge away and score the glass in the normal way. Voila! I don’t know what it's original use was but i assume it was an engineer’s gauge for setting out. Phew that was a long winded answer when a simple photo would have explained it better!

I use something called a "scratch wire brush" to help with highlighting hair and beards on painted backgrounds, mostly. If I run it up and down I get wide parallel lines, side to side the bristles merge to make very tightly-packed lines or even a single wide line. Rotating it while pulling gives a lovely wavy effect that would take much longer with a scraper that just made a single line. They're cheap (under $10) and last basically forever.

I now use some small rubber tools that are normally used for pottery sculpting. They remove paint nicely.
