By far the best way to hedge against inflation and food shortages is to be a mindful prepper. Have three well stocked pantries, one for daily use, one to refill the first, and one for foods that last indefinately and/or freeze dried foods. Only shop Grocery Outlet stores, DO NOT use a list, buy only what you know you use, and only when it is at rock bottome prices and/or WOW deals, or Winco bulk bins, and Amazon for dried bulk grains.
Use clear plastic totes to form mini-green houses to grow salads, and build a DIY hydroponic system that will produce food year round.
Buy produce from the 'REDUCED' bins at grocery stores, eat some now, and dry the rest for future use.
Only shop once or twice a month.
Having bulk foods stored in mylar bags inside food grade buckets with gasket lids will last a very long time. Buckets can be bought for $1 each or free from some local bakeries. Being a prepper has many advantages, not least if one lives alone and happens to be ill. No need to rely upon others, it is a great feeling to be independent as well as saving money. Prep mindfully, not just for food, but for all aspects of one's life. When possible buy used in great condition instead of new. Even new items still in original wrappers can be found at thrift stores. Shop local thrift stores in wealthy neighbourhoods. I love knowing that what I spend supports animals in need or other charities I care about.

Take advantage of store loyalty cards and apps for your favorite stores. Also, don't limit yourself to just one store. Sometimes you can get a better deal for what you want at another location.

Tbh, in this age of UberEats, buying a lot of frozen stuff and an air fryer is useful advice.

I used to get groceries for mom dad n me. Dad wanted the list she made out followed to the max when he found out i had been stockpiling a few cans per week He was livid because Dad was an alcoholic and stockpiling a few cans per week took money from his beer

About bringing your own bags. Notice how thick they are AND TERRIBLE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT . I don’t even bring them into the store. I reload my groceries into my cart after paying. I bag them up ( the way I like them ) in my trunk . After putting away my groceries I wipe them down with a little bit of rubbing alcohol ( they dry quickly and won’t mold), fold them up neatly and back into a cute tote that goes into my car so I can’t forget them. Doing this for 3 years now. Rarely buy a bag. Might start using an old sturdy laundry basket.

Meal-plan. Cook from scratch as much as possible. Do your shopping-list from your meal-plan and only deviate if you find things with serious discounts as replacement. Eat less meat, try to have at least a couple of meat-free dinners a week. Buy only fruit and veggies in season. Cut down on snacks, treats and soft drinks if you can’t cut them out completely.

If name brands are on sale- it’s possible they would be cheaper than store brand, research or just pay attention.
