Why So Many Cloud Types?

What's going on inside a cloud that gives it its distinct appearance? Clouds are classified according to two main characteristics—their height in the atmosphere and their shape.

Clouds play an important role in keeping our water supply from dropping too low, the more rain, the less likely there is to be a drought.
Also, if it is Summer time and the whole sky is covered with thick clouds all day, it will keep the air cool and stop the air temperature from rising too high and stop winter nights from being too cold.
