How would you react if your renter suddenly act like an owner?

Well firstly everyone who is saying op is wrong is just as dumb as the roomate. Its his fault that he never asked more questions, plus I don't understand whats the problem with the roomate paying most of op monthly fee. How would this be diffrent than if a landlord used the money from the rent he gets paied in order to pay his own mortage?

dude, the rent is cheap, now you have to find a new much expensive place.🤦🤦

Dudes paying 1/3 what he would for a similar apartment, why’s it such an issue that his landlord lives upstairs, especially when the lease he didn’t read clearly stated so? It’s ignorance on his part

Ok then let them stay in another apartment so they can drain their account

"You're making me cover most of the mortgage!" The rent includes utilities and the mortgage is only that low because of the big down payment. Some people just can't recognize a good deal when they get one.

so what 650 a month is literally nothing I would kill to have that much space even if it's a basement for only 650. I think bro just actually needs to grow up

NTA if it was in the contract, the fault falls on the one that signed.
This is why you have to read any and every thing you put your name into.

Dude, *tons* of landlords are still paying on their mortgage while renting. AirBnB and Vrbo hosts are often paying on their mortgages while renting out rooms. Instead of saying no landlord, he should have said he was the landlord, which is more accurate. But he didn't do anything wrong here. He was in a position to help a friend get a place for much cheaper than he otherwise would have. He already saved the dude $600 to $1200 a month, depending, so why anyone thinks he's obligated to go even further is just nuts.

Even if the house was fully owned with no mortgage, it's not OP's responsibility to give free room and board to anyone. If the guy doesn't like that he's paying $650... Let him go find somewhere else.

Every single rental property is set up to pay the mortgage. This guy getting mad is weird.

He was going to try to get that house out from under him

Yeah, go low contact, ride out the lease, then out he goes. Meet contractual obligations to tenant, nothing more, be on guard for bullshit.
Oh, and if the toilet stops working properly after he leaves, then he's shoved something in there. Check the cistern first, u bend second. Common sabotage move from asshole tenants who didn't get their own way, seen it first hand. Document. Everything.

Since people rent property at a higher rate than there cost by sometimes double I'd say ops very generous.

no, i wouldve felt ten times more secure that they let me stay in a legit basement apartment for 650 when rent is up $2, 100 for a studio apartment

WTF no this guy did nothing wrong you werent actively trying to hide it because you said you thought your friend told him youre the owner besides i dont see how it makes a difference if he has a decent place to live and a good price then what is he even complaining about it sounds like weird entitlement besides how you handle your finances is like you said not his business

Seems like you are getting over on your friend.
