Beowulf - Grendel's Mother Reacts! - European - Extra Mythology

With Heorot saved from the menace of Grendel, Beowulf can finally leave and get back to adventuring. Except the night before he leaves, the king's advisor is abducted as revenge! Even something as monstrous as Grendel had a mother, and she won't rest until all of the Danes have been slain. So Beowulf dons his armor and seeks out Grendel's mother in her lair, beneath a fetid lake filled with water like acid and so deep no human has ever seen the bottom.

For those that only saw the CGI movie. No Grendel's mom was not a hot golden lady, no Grendel was not Hrothgar's mutant monster son, no she and Beowulf did not bang, and no the dragon is not Beowulf's son.

While the CGI movie does deviate from the source material, I like where it went. Just because it's a different point than the book doesn't make it a bad point. They heavily implied that the king mated with the water witch and that Gredel was his son, and that the dragon we see later was the offspring of the water witch and Beowulf, perpetuating the cycle of men who'd rather have a good lay with the water witch than put an end to all the troublesome monsters. The king knew that Beowulf had just perpetuated the cycle, and so publicly named Beowulf his successor and then committed suicide, seemingly to laugh at the impending comeuppance beyond the grave.

Seamus Heaney's translation of this story is one of my favorites. I bought it few years ago for a camping trip and read pretty much the whole thing by the time I got back home (it's only about one hundred pages long). Apparently, it's one of the closest written works that translates it near directly from the original text without adding/removing or editing too much. Worth checking out for anyone who's interested
