Underneath all of his brutality, Grendel is such a broken character. He’s judged but only attacks because he doesn’t like loudness. All he ever wanted was to literally live a quiet life.

This film has more in common with a horror film than a Lord of the Rings type of fantasy. Really excellent work by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avery, the screen writers.

You could say pots and pans clatter together if they hit one another, for instance, to use the word as a verb in a sentence.

As with any memorable movie monster, there is beauty even in Grendel.
His decayed and infected flesh still has patches of glimmering golden scales, and his speaking voice, when he isn’t shrieking in pain and anger, is surprisingly soft. He even looks, to me, almost cute when he glances up at his mother like a sulking child.
This interpretation of the monster makes me wish there was another way, that instead of killing him, a hero could have reasoned with him.

I think she was basically giving him a soft scolding for killing men. Sounded like she said fish and wolf and bear, sheep or two but not men. They have killed so many of our kind.

The first time I heard it, I didn't think it was Old English, since I could understand it. I just thought Grendel pronounced English words as they are written, with some German words thrown into the mix for some reason.
But it was really a cool choice from the writers: they chose simple, easy words that are still used today but the way Grendel pronounces them is totally different, thus emphasizing his strangeness.

The first time I saw this movie was on cable in 2008 in Nigeria. I was 11 years old and had no idea about the story or the legend of Beowulf. I just wanted some action and cool fights. When I was hearing the old english, I literally thought it was some fictional fantasy language😂 It was only when I went on encarta on my dad's PC and looked up Beowulf that I learned the existence of old english.
