Diamond vs Hammer

I’ve always wanted to try the infamous diamond vs hammer experiment… so I did!

DISCLAIMER: This experiment was performed by a professionally trained jeweler. Real diamonds WERE harmed in the process. Attempt at your own risk.

I got the science wrong on this one. The Mohs hardness scale is not related to whether something will break when struck by another object. It measures hardness, which measures how easily an object can be scratched, not broken. Diamond is the hardest material on earth in that only a diamond can scratch another diamond. I apologize for the misinformation.

And about how difficult it is to break a diamond, hardness is the wrong property to reference. That would be its toughness, the ability to resist breaking from impacts. Diamond is still fairly tough but it can break from any impact with enough force that lines up with a cleavage plane. That force doesn’t have to come from another diamond.

I will make a future video more focused on the scratchability of a diamond and I’ll try not to get the science wrong.

Thanks for watching.

As a geologist a common misconception is assuming hardness is equivalent to strength while diamonds are very hard there also very brittle so they break easily when force is applied correctly

Hardness just means the hammer cant scratch it. The diamond can still shatter.

LOL A diamond can break with a small tap if you know where to strike it. Saves a LOT of cutting! Diamond cutters study large rough diamonds until they know where the fracture lines are in the crystalline structure, then a small groove is made in it with another diamond, a chisel is set into the groove, and tapped sharply with a hammer. If the cutter made the right call, the diamond will split right in two. If not, it will shatter into little bits. The cutter who divided the Cullinan diamond (largest diamond ever found) studied it for two YEARS before he made his decision on where to split it. When he finally made the crucial tap, the diamond fell into two pieces- and the cutter fell off his stool in a dead faint!

I just saw the response that your experiment was inspired by NileRed and it made me smile.

Hardness is scratchability, toughness is shaterablility. The reason adding the diamond to the hammer broke the other diamond is because it was focusing the force of the hammer to a smaller point, because it was the same force over a much smaller area, creating massively higher pressure.

"OH shit" 😂 this is one of my favorite channels, and this just reinforced that

I guess you could say that diamond is unbreakable.
What a crazy diamond

The diamond is, unbreakable? That’s crazy

Nope. You can smash a diamond. Hardness just means you can't scratch it, not that you can't break it.

Due to the imperfections in the diamond you CAN break it with a steel hammer. Also diamond is susceptible to high force shattering due to its molecular structure

Glass is harder than wood but I can still shatter a window with a bat. Hardness doesn't mean it cant be broken

you're really a dwarf from Tolkien's realm, aren't you? for some reason my brain just keeps saying "only one of those dwarven master smiths would have thought about putting diamonds at the head of a hammer"

Nah that hammer is so cool looking now

Bro was tapping that diamond so gently with that hammer

Is this the most expensive video that I've ever seen 🤔

The fact that I’d buy the diamond hammer to show off says a lot about me 😅

I mean, diamonds are the hardest but they are also brittle... you CAN smash a diamond with a hammer...

Cutting something and shattering it are 2 different things that are almost unrelated. You can shatter a diamond with an aluminum can if you hit it hard enough.
