Paul Sellers demonstrates using this unusual woodworking plane that does not smooth the surface but instead produces long curled shavings used for lighting fires, candles or pipes. It is an ancestor to the match!

Wow - that's the kind of stuff that gets lost to history too quickly. Thanks for posting.

Super cool, great conversation piece on lost history. So it was basically a match without the brim. Thanks for sharing.

I also just bought a weird plane in an eBay job lot, thought "Is it a spiil plane?" and did a youTube search for 'spill plane' ... sure enough it looks just like Paul's except mine is worse for wear and I think the iron is a thinner flat replacement. Should be a fun little project to get it into full working order. Thanks for the excellent information Paul 😀

Paul, i love when you introduce extinct tools usage. An extinct tool does not mean it's no longer useful, it only means no company is no longer producing it for various reasons.

I picked one up at a flea market. Probably 100+ years old now. It works great!

Nice find. I just found out that Lee Valley still makes a cast-iron reproduction of one of these.

I love this craft, I wish I discovered it sooner, starting at 49 seems too late, better late than never.

Hi, Paul, is there any chance you could give some information in regard to the set up of the plane and the angle's used in relation to the blade and the base of the plane. I would really like to have a go at making one. Thanks.

If anybody is looking, I've seen these in Lee Valley's catalogue.

That's interesting. Most likely very few people ever heard of such a thing.
