Carolina on my Mind, Shower the People, Fire and Rain. These are other great JT songs. They played this particular song at my son's funeral because he was always there for his friends if they needed him, be it giving them a place to sleep, food, a ride, if they just needed to talk or even bailing one or 2 out of jail in their younger, wilder days! Some of his friends suggested this song for his funeral service as their way of honoring his friendship to them, and 2 of his best buds were pall bearers. But this song doesn't make me sad, just fills me with warm memories of Daniel's genuine love and concern for his friends and how he always wanted to help them any way he could.

This song's writer, Carole King, won the Grammy for song of the year at the 1972 awards show. Her version is on her amazing 1971 album "Tapestry, " which won album of the year. He won the Grammy for best male pop vocal. You can find clips of James singing "You've Got a Friend" with Carole on piano back in the '70s, and of the two of them singing it together as a duet in the 2000s.
