so basically, in any given field there are basics and fundamental things to know and understand. Once you know these things then you can use them to think creatively and profer solutions to problems that come up. otherwise if you didn't have these basic understandings then you'd be at a disadvantage in that field and find it frustrating and hard to even comprehend a solution or even what a problem looks like in the first place.
I guess it's much like chess- once you know the rules and how the pieces move on the board then you can use that set of knowledge to think and creatively come up with solutions in the game play in order to win. if you don't know the rules and how the pieces move then you're basically screwed
