When doing “hack” 1 and reloading film be sure to set shutter speed at the fastest speed allowed and stop down you aperture to 16 or higher. This will greatly reduce the amount of time your first frames are re-exposed to light. Also, place your thumb over the viewfinder.

Tip 1 is very risky for many many reasons, possibly if you have to do this, advance one past where you left off, as there’s a chance if you lead with less film the first time, two of your photos are going to be overlapping

If you have a camera with automated ISO reading (ie DX reading) you can modify the film canister barcode to trick the camera to metering for a different ISO if you want to push/pull. Tutorials exist online. Actually works

My favorite is to shop online classifieds (FB, Craigslist, etc.) in towns where friends and family live for deals on cheap film camera gear. Have them pick it up locally and either send it to you or better yet, use it as a reason to go visit.

Thanks for these super tips! For the first one (reusing an unfinished film), I also choose the fastest speed and the smallest aperture when I shot the blind pictures. Maybe it's not necessary but in bright sunlight, you never now...

if saving film to use later aways do +1 of how many shots it said to avoid overlapping exposures. say you rewound @8 exposures. advance to 9 when reloading it

Thank you. I have always wondered about interrupting a roll of film, continuing with a different roll, then resuming with the interrupted roll. You solved that question with an easy hack.

For tip#4 always go for rechargeable ones, theyre only a little more expensive but they can last waaay longer so you'd only have to buy one for life and be secured if your battery drains in the middle of a shoot. Plus its less waste for the environment!

You can use extra roll of film as a "film retriver" if you mess up Tip-1. Wet the mate side of the extra roll and feed into the canister you want to save. Turn canister nub untill the extra film starts going in, then pull them away. If you do it fast enough the film lead will fly out.

Great hacks! I’ve used a lot of these when shooting film especially the one where you rewind film to save for later

About you film saving idea (3:13) not a bad idea, however I would NOT leave the lens on the camera, instead, I would remove the lens and replace it with a cap.
ALSO if you shot 7 don’t repeat seven shots, instead shoot 8. That way you will be greatly reducing the chance of making a double exposure of you previous last (7) shot.
(Re-used film rarely lines up perfectly.)

I shoot digital 99% of the time. When I shoot film, I barely shoot a roll every eight weeks or so.
Because sometimes I need to use a different type of film (after only taking a few shots),
I purchased ANOTHER film camera which you need as back-up anyway.

That is one man’s idea.

Thanks for your post.

I just have to say THANK YOU for sharing so many great tips and your knowledge!
Im quite new to film photography (or photography in general) and knowing almost nothing, it was quite confusing at first. But after watching your videos, film didnt seem so scary after all.
So going from not knowing how to load a can of 35 to shooting both 35/120, developing both color/BW and scanning myself, I just want to thank you for helping me on the way!

VERY helpful man! I'm getting bored with digital, and now that I've figured out how to scan with my DSLR and don't have to get back into chemicals in the bathroom - I'm all in!

There aren’t as many on the market now, but you can buy a film leader retriever on Amazon. Fast and easy. Used mine a ton back in the 90s.
