i would add some precisions, the over exposure rule is good if you shot negatives (think oposite way as digital, more light give more opaque negatives that are easier to work with later, and under exposed negatives give thin negs almost transparent so no infomations to bring back...) but don't do that with slide/positive as they have a very narrow dynamic range and as positive they almost work like digital... Another precison, for ND i will not use a varible one at all cost, as you don't know at what setting you are on almost all of them, so you can't calculate how less stop you have to dial in your camera if this one doesn't have a built in light meter, i would rather pick a ND8 and ND4 to bring back the exposure to what the camera can handle or just close the apperture a bit if possible

Thanks for the tips!

I’m still using my Epson Perfection V550 Photo Scanner for my negatives and slides, Good output + high resolution.

Hey Graham, have you done a video on how to clean a used or refurbished film camera? If not, it would be helpful. Replacing the seal method was invaluable. I’m a new subscriber to your channel and just purchased a canon EOS Elan iie. Thanks!

Great useful tips! Perhaps a follow-up on the light seals tip: a ‘What went wrong, mistakes/tips’ video with photo examples? Would be interesting to see which (common) mistakes are the photographers fault and which are of a faulty camera :) Especially since you know so much about camera repair!

The shutter speeds on those 40, 50 or 60 year old cameras are more of an estimate than a real number. Even with a CLA the springs may not be replaceable so you will have to adjust. BUT, shooting film is more fun and definitely more challenging than filling an SD card. Even the bad results tell you a lot so the next time will be better.

Tip 4: Yeah, I tend to stop down when shooting film with a large aperture lens to make sure I don't miss focus.

Great video, nice tips and very entertaining, thanks! One addition: for slide film better do not overexpose. It will ruin the colors.

"If in doubt, overexpose your film a stop". Totally valid advice, with exception that you had forgot to mention that you ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NOT do that if you are using slide / transparent film. You and I know that, but a newbie might not....

So.... lots of great tips here, but please know the physics of making lenses puts the sharpest part of any lens at aperture 7.1 to 8. That's why there is the saying "F8 and be there!"

I found out my minolta is off by half a stop... after about 4 rolls of film.
