There is a quote her father says about her falling for any boy who will have her and I don't think either of the men she fell for were just any men. The first was definitely young and new but he never asked her to be anything other than what she was, a cowgirl. I think he genuinely would have been a great man for her to live a life in the world they were heading towards.
When she lost him, and then met Sam, he taught her how to grieve and still love rather than hate. But the future that she was to have interested her none when they killed her first love. That future filled with dresses and babies and gardening was no longer the future for her. Sam was the best for her because he also never wished for her to be anything other than who she was...lightning with the yellow hair. Honestly, her death was as she wished it to be, a hero's death, protecting others and fighting off those who would fo harm. Since she died like a warrior, I think her meeting up with Sam a year later was them in the afterlife, both dying warriors, both spending eternity free amongst the plains.
