3 ways to design more interesting CHARACTERS

It’s easy to end up designing characters that don’t really have a lot going for them, or don’t have much that makes them distinct from your other characters. But there are lots of methods out there that can help you practice designing with more originally and well thought out ideas, and I think also just make character designing more fun. Here are three of those things that I’ve found really helpful.

Great advice for others! For some reason I already did all this stuff without learning. Just like how I accidentally make good music without writing! I'm sure this could be very useful, though!

For me I found the best way is to wait until you have a really clear and motivated idea in your head instead of forcing yourself to make a character. Then go into whatever program you’re designing your character on and basically vomit all of your ideas for the character’s design. Let that cook for a day or two then come back and redesign if necessary. Then let that redesign cook and come back to it again. Repeat the process until you end up with a well baked Original Character™
Know that it’ll really depend for each character in regards to how many design changes you do, and how exactly you go about redesigning. For example, an OC I made a long time ago (which has now become a part of my creative history because he was the first of a made up species I became obsessed with) Has had 4 redesigns (2 paper designs, 2 digital designs) until I was fairly happy with his 4th design for a certain period of time, but then I decided to give him a lab coat which became his 5th and SORT OF final design. I say sort of because his character was later abandoned but as of recent I’m deciding to fish up his design again and just implant it as a different character if that makes sense. On the contrary, I made an OC recently that I pretty much nailed the first time except he didn’t have any eyebrows, and then the next day I realized bro’s forehead looked empty which lead to me giving him eyebrows, and that was it.

do you have any tips for coming up with outfits? i love the intricate metalwork on the cloak, the dress, and the shoes. its is a part of character design i always struggle with that isn't talked about as much
